How to replace a two or three handle tub and or shower faucet, to a single handle faucet, without having to break the tile. or repair the wall.
This handy kit comes with a template that gives you a guide to where to cut the tile and wall board. screws and chrome plate, it also comes in brass, polished chrome and other colors, There are other brands out there Moen makes one Wolverine brass makes one, and I'm sure there are others. Each plate works best with the manufacturers faucet.
Before you start, make sure the water is off and drained, The wall I worked on in this replacement was in good shape, the wall could be in bad shape and may fall apart on you causing you to have no choice but to replace the whole wall and all the tiles. check for weak spots before you begin, once you start you are committed and there is no turning back.
I call this repair plate a goof plate, but it is a, two to three handle shower faucet, to a single handle faucet replacement repair plate.
This is how I found the faucet, the home owners were so afraid they would have to replace the tile and the wall, they let the faucet get this bad before calling me.
I removed the handles from the old faucet, I cut the template from the back of the faucet replacement kit, and drew a line on the tile wall with a marker.
This is what the wall and the faucet look like before I start cutting along the line I made with the template.
I used a Dremel tool with a tile cutting bit to cut the tile along the line, you need to be careful not to go too deep into the wall when cutting the tile.
If you go to deep you will cut into the water pipes behind the wall causing your self extra work. At this point the water should have been turned off and drained.
Ok I have gone all the way around the line I drew on the wall, now all I have to do is remove the piece of cut tile and wall board, I cut this one just deep enough, I got all the way through the tile and wall board and I did not hit any pipes.
A perfect cut, if I wanted to replace this faucet with another 3 handle faucet I could just replace the shower body and put this cut piece back and re grout the seam, but that would look like crap.
Now this is all the room you will have to work with, this is tight and soldering in such a tight place can become a fire hazard. If a fire starts behind the tiles you will have no way to stop it. Know this before you start doing this.
Once you cut the old faucet body out you have enough room to add support for the new shower body you intend to install.
Here I soldered in a new shower faucet with stops on each side, because of the stops I had to offset the cold water pipe a little to make it work normally I just come up and over to the new faucet.
Now the I have turned the water back on and made sure I had no water leaks and there is nothing burning in the wall I setup the repair plate. I just put the white plastic parts in the wall and tighten the screws till the plate is against the tiles.
Now that is it for the Delta Faucet replacement, repair plate, the rest of the chrome trim comes from the faucet you purchased.
Install your new faucets trim kit on top of the Delta repair plate and you are done
Put a small bead of tub and tile caulk around the goof plate and where the faucet trip covers the repair plate. And now you are done, Good Job.
